The collection includes photographs mostly of the Pennsylvania Railroad. There are also photographs of the Monon Railroad and Nickel Plate railroads and some railroads in Central America, Southeast Asia, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

The origin of the Monon Railroad dates back to 1847 with the founding of the New Albany and Salem Railroad in Borden, Ind. The railroad got its nickname "Monon" from a creek near Bradford, Ind. Alfter several mergers, expansions and reorganizations, the Monon became an independent line in 1946. Railroad founded in 1881 to connect Buffalo and Chicago via Cleveland. It was nicknamed the Nickel Plate Road. After it failed it was taken over by the newly organized New York, Chicago, and St. Louis Railroad in 1887. It merged into the Norfolk and Western Railroad in 1964.
